  17.    This memo provides information for the Internet community.  It does
  18.    not specify an Internet standard.  Distribution of this memo is
  19.    unlimited.

  21. Discussion
  22.  
  23.    As a result of the NREN NIS award by National Science Foundation,
  24.    non-DDN registration services will soon be transferred from the DDN
  25.    NIC to the new Internet Registration Service, which is a part of an
  26.    entity referred to as the InterNIC.  References in this document to
  27.    the InterNIC apply to the Registration Services portion only.
  28.  
  29.    Internet registration services are gradually transitioning to the
  30.    InterNIC.  We expect that the full transition will be accomplished by
  31.    April 1, 1993.  During this transitional period, EMail, Fax, and U.S.
  32.    mail received at either site will be processed.  DDN users will
  33.    continue to receive full registration support from the DDN NIC, and
  34.    the transition should be transparent to them.  DDN users should
  35.    continue to send registration requests to hostmast@nic.ddn.mil (IP,
  36.    .mil domain, inaddr for 26.x.x.x) or registrar@nic.ddn.mil (user
  37.    registrations or TAC card requests) using the DISA approved
  38.    registration forms.
  39.  
  40.    From now through March 31, 1993, non-DDN Internet registration
  41.    requests will be handled as follows:

  43.       The current DDN NIC registration templates may be filled out and
  44.       submitted to either hostmaster@internic.net or
  45.       hostmaster@nic.ddn.mil through March 31.  The new InterNIC
  46.       templates will be accepted effective April 1, 1993, but not until
  47.       that time.

  94.    In an effort to keep those who are likely to submit a high volume of
  95.    registration requests informed during the transition period,
  96.    information regarding Internet registration issues will be
  97.    distributed via the mail list rs-info@internic.net.  Send
  98.    subscription requests to:

  102.    Information on the location of the new autoreg templates and how to
  103.    retrieve them will be sent to those who have subscribed to this list.
  104.    Comments are solicited.  The new registration templates have been
  105.    modified to facilitate automatic processing and to remove all DDN-
  106.    specific references.

  108.    WHOIS services will be available at both the DDN NIC and InterNIC
  109.    sites:

  122.    Effective April 1, 1993, only DDN information will be available from
  123.    whois.nic.ddn.mil.  The WHOIS service available from
  124.    whois.internic.net will contain all information on IP addresses,
  125.    domains, and ASNs.  The WHOIS service available from the
  126.    whois.internic.net will contain individual user records only for
  127.    those who serve as a Point of Contact for an active node.  Those who
  128.    are interested in establishing a whois service for information on
  129.    individual users (e.g., for Internet hosts or campus networks) are
  130.    encouraged to participate in one of the many distributed WHOIS-like
  131.    information projects.

  133.    Root zone files will be available at both sites through March 31,
  134.    1993.  After that time, the root zone file will be available only
  135.    from ftp.rs.internic.net.
  136.  
  137.    After the transition, the host.txt file will be available only from
  138.    nic.ddn.mil and hosts.txt will include ONLY MILNET HOSTS.  On April
  139.    1, 1993, a new root DNS server will be placed in service.  It will be
  140.    available at ns.internic.net ( 198.41.0.4 ).
  141.  
  142.    The T1 service currently available to the DDN NIC will be
  143.    disconnected by June 1, 1993.  This will leave only 56K access to the
  144.    DDN NIC site. Excessive traffic to this site after that date will
  145.    cause congestion. Therefore, it is important that all Internet
  146.    registration data be directed to the new InterNIC site.  The InterNIC
  147.    registration services facility will be connected to SuraNET via T1
  148.    around March 10, 1993.

  150.    Automated Internet registration services will be available from the
  151.    InterNIC registration service host.  This new automated system will
  152.    allow more accurate and timely processing of registration requests.
  153.    The basic functions/features of the new automated registration
  154.    process (autoreg) are outlined below:
  155.  
  156.    * Requestor sends a completed new template to
  157.      autoreg@internic.net.
  158.  
  159.    * The mailserver/parser on the InterNIC registration host parses
  160.      the template and makes a quick check of all verifiable
  161.      information (such as Domain name conflicts).  The server
  162.      then sends an E-mail verification or rejection with error message
  163.      back to the requestor.
  164.  
  165.    * After receiving the verification form for review, the requestor
  166.      should ensure that the information was interpreted correctly by the
  167.

  175.      parser.  If the information is correct, the requestor returns the
  176.      verify form to verify@internic.net.  If the information is not
  177.      correct, the requestor should make the necessary corrections before
  178.      returning the form.  If a rejection was received the requesstor
  179.      must make the necessary adjustments and resend the registration
  180.      request to autoreg@internic.net for processing.

  182.    * On receipt of a corrected verification form from the original
  183.      requestor, the data will be rechecked and a new verification form
  184.      will be sent.  Once a good verification has been received by
  185.      Registration Services, the request will be released for final
  186.      processing by the InterNIC registration staff.
  187.  
  188.      NOTE: If the requestor does not return the verification form to the
  189.      InterNIC within seven days after it is mailed, the original
  190.      registration request will expire, and it must be resubmitted.
  191.  
  192.    Information on the status of all registration requests will be
  193.    available to users via two methods.  The first method employs the
  194.    "finger" utility.  The finger utility is executed specifying the
  195.    "trouble ticket" (tt) number returned with the registration request
  196.    verification/ confirmation message.

  200.    Users will also be able to obtain status information by connecting to
  201.    rs.internic.net via telnet and executing the "status <ticket number>"

  241.    the DDN-NIC. However, the commands used on the InterNIC system are
